Flying in Dreams

Flying in dreams is a common sensation, even in non-lucid dreams. I can remember some very vivid dreams I had as a child where I was flying through buildings with which I was very familiar. The sensation of flying in dreams is like none other, and in lucid dreams, it can be extra fun because you can control where you’re going and how you’re flying in dreams.

Many people start out with dream control by flying in dreams. They often start out with this technique because it’s one that comes naturally. Also, though, flying is a great way to get around your lucid dreamscape, so you can travel to new places. There are lots of different ways to start flying in dreams, and different people have different techniques.

Don’t be surprised if your flying techniques change over time and experience with lucid dreaming. Many people find that they use less sophisticated, more involved techniques early on in lucid dreaming because they don’t yet have the power to simply make things happen. Later on, they may refine their techniques to where they can just think about flying and just start doing it.

One of the ways you can start flying in dreams is to create a runway and start running down it like an airplane. You’ll probably want to make sure your dreamscape has plenty of room for a long runway. Sometimes you’ll end up waking yourself up because you get ready to run into something. Until your mind can fully grasp that you can be invincible and have total control in lucid dreams, it’s easy to be woken up by scary or startling situations like this. If you don’t have room for a runway, you can use a jumping technique, instead.

Some people like to try flying in dreams as a sort of controlled floating. To do this, you can start jumping up, higher and higher. With each jump tell yourself that you’ll get higher and come down slower. Eventually, you’ll be jumping so high that all you’ll need is to keep floating around in order to control your flying. This type of technique doesn’t take as much room as the runway option, and it might be a little easier to control for newer lucid dreamers.

If you have any practice morphing yourself in lucid dreams, you can try giving yourself wings, as well. This helps for flying in dreams, for sure. I personally like having wings – it’s very ethereal and an all-around interesting experience. Flying with wings is different from floating around, but they’re both fun.

You can give yourself wings by looking into a mirror and drawing wings on your reflection. The wings will usually become part of your real dream body, so you can have any sorts of wings you want. Morphing yourself into a flying being isn’t difficult at all, but it’s definitely one of the simpler ways to start flying in dreams.

When you’re flying in dreams, you may need to slowly work on controlling your speed and direction. Try to keep things calm, and don’t get too excited when you start flying. Getting overly excited is the best way to wake yourself up! If you can remain calm, you can start learning to steer by performing certain actions – turning your head, moving your arms, etc. This will give you more ability to control your speed and direction. As you become more experienced at lucid dreaming, you’ll be able to just think to control your dream body, as you do your physical body in real life.

Flying in dreams is definitely one of my favorite things to do, but it took me some practice to learn how to work it right. Just practice until you get your flying technique down. There’s nothing else like it!
