Hypnagogic Roller Coaster

The Hypnagogic Roller Coaster is a technique that I often find myself using. It’s especially useful during the hypnagogic state of half-consciousness (just as you’re about to drift off to sleep). It also works really well after performing Wake Back to Bed.

One good thing when using this visualization is that you’re not required to imagine the environment as soon as you’re in the roller coaster. Just like in the real world, riding a roller coaster can be a blurry visual experience, so your subconscious will automatically suffuse the visual surroundings as if your lucid dream was actually taking place in real life.

Remember to visualize the roller coaster ride through a first-person perspective. Third-person view probably won’t work for you, because it doesn’t work for me. You can always browse some YouTube videos of roller coaster rides in the first-person perspective, if you ever have problems with visualizing your own roller coaster ride.

In the beginning, situate your lucid dream body in the foremost carriage of the roller coaster, then visualize the roller coaster taking off. However, before it launches forward, spend a few moments to visualize the details of your lucid dream environment. Try to imagine the colors of the roller coaster, the overall structural design of it, and think of how the textures of your seat cushion and footrest feel like. Imagine the sounds of people laughing and chatting in your vicinity, listen to the clashing of the metal emanating from other roller coasters, and listen to the thrillful shrieks of people on nearby roller coasters. This will make it much more easy for you to visualize your own ride.

During the roller coaster ride, try to visualize your lucid dream body throwing its hands up, screaming, or doing whatever you would usually do on a real coaster. The roller coaster’s deisgn should be thoughtfully designed by your conscious mind during the first two minutes, but after that approximate timeframe, allow the roller coaster to design itself.

As soon as it hits you that the roller coaster has been driving itself for a while, visualize the coaster decelerating and slowing down, then step out of the ride. Perform a dream stabilization technique, then continue with your lucid dream. If you would prefer to simply enjoy the ride, then go ahead and stay in the roller coaster — just remember that it’s easier to stay lucid if you step off.
