Lucid dreaming is just the ability to know that you are dreaming. You see it happen all the time in movies, but you can also make it happen in real life. You really can know that you are dreaming. What happens once you know that you are dreaming? Then, you can take complete control over your dreams. Since it’s a dream, anything’s possible. When you know that you are dreaming, you can fly or become invincible or fight your worst enemies and overcome them once and for all.
The key, though, is learning how to know that you are dreaming. This is the most difficult part of lucid dreaming for most people. Once you overcome this hurdle, you’ll be able to make your dreams do whatever you want them to do. Dream control is much easier than dream induction. Luckily, over the years, many people have developed great techniques to let you know that you are dreaming. Here are just a few of the essential ones:
- Reality Checks: These are an essential ingredient in learning how to know that you are dreaming. Essentially, you’ll be checking reality to see if you’re in a dream world or the real world. Since the physical world follows certain rules – rules that can be broken in the dream world – this can take on any number of forms. For instance, you might look at something written, look away, and look at it again. In the physical world, the writing will be the same, but in a dream world, it will most likely change. Reality checks are most effective if you train yourself to do them during the day, which makes you more likely to do them in your dreams.
- Dream Recall: This is a surprisingly important skill to learn if you want to know that you are dreaming. At first, don’t even think about becoming lucid. Instead, just make sure you’re remembering your dreams to the best of your ability. Writing down your dreams can help you remember them better. This is also important because recalling your dreams can help you know when you might have done reality checks in those dreams, making it more likely that you’ll remember to do them the next time.
- Mnemonics: One of the best ways to know that you are dreaming is to set your intentions to make sure your brain does wake up during your dreams. Mnemonics – phrases that you repeat to yourself over and over – can be really helpful on this level. Repeating to yourself before you go to sleep that you’ll understand you’re dreaming or know that you’re dreaming can help your subconscious mind understand what you want. When your subconscious understands this, you’re more likely to remember to do reality checks in your dreams, for instance.
- Subliminal Messages: These are similar to mnemonics, but they’re given on a subliminal level. You can give yourself subliminal messages about lucid dreaming if you induce a hypnotic state. You can also get many CDs that can feed your unconscious subliminal messages about lucid dreaming, which can be really helpful. Subliminal messages work like mnemonics in setting your intentions to have lucid dreams, making them more likely to happen.
Learning to have lucid dreams is all about waking up your consciousness while you’re still asleep. There are tons of different techniques out there that can be helpful to different dreamers. Dream recall and reality checks are the first things to work on, but subliminal messages and mnemonics can be incredibly helpful, too. There are plenty of great resources here for you to check out as you find out more about how to know that you are dreaming during your dreams.
