You cycle through these levels of sleep regularly every night, going down into and coming back out of delta sleep. This is why you’re groggy when you wake up from a too-long nap—you’ve woken yourself directly out of delta sleep, which isn’t a great idea.

With binaural beats, alternating beats are sent to your ears one at a time, but your brain will make up the difference between the two—causing a shift in brainwaves and your consciousness. By changing the listener’s brainwave patterns, a lucidity induction MP3 can help you enter the correct state of sleep for lucid dreaming at the right time, depending on whether you’re using the Wake Back to Bed technique or are just falling asleep for the first time at night. The frequencies don’t physically change your brainwaves, but your brain will move to match up with them, so you can manually shift between the theta and alpha phases, dreaming while remaining conscious.
