There are so many techniques for lucid dreaming out there. How do you decide which techniques for lucid dreaming work best? The truth is that all techniques for lucid dreaming work “best” – just for different people. There are some that are more universally accepted because they seem to work for more people, but these same techniques may not work for a few individuals out there who just need something different to control or induce lucid dreaming.
So how did all these different techniques for lucid dreaming come about? Some of them were hit on by experts like Stephen LaBerge, who has done tons of research on lucid dreaming. Other techniques come from dreaming traditions like Dream Yoga and meditation, and still others have just been made up by modern day lucid dreamers trying to modify old techniques to see what works well for them.
How do you figure out which techniques for lucid dreaming work for you? Well, you need to know who you are, and lucid dreaming can help you figure that out. You’ll probably also need to experiment a little to see what works. One struggle for new lucid dreamers is that they are afraid to try something new or out-of-the-box because they fear waking up or losing lucidity. Fear will paralyze you when it comes to lucid dreams! Remember that even if you do wake up, you can always get back into your dreams at another time, so you should never fear this at all.
Learning Your Best Techniques for Lucid Dreaming
Most people learn or think in particular ways. I, for instance, am a very tactile person. In school, I always liked sculpture better than painting, and you can’t take me into a store with fabric or clothing without having me run my hands over everything. I experience the world in large part through touch. You might learn through movement, through words, through reading, through visuals, or through listening. There are tons of different ways to learn, and the way you learn and experience the world has a lot to do with the way you think.
Why do I bring this up now? I bring it up because the techniques for lucid dreaming that work best for you will most likely align with the way that you think through the world. Some people prefer visual or imaginative techniques, while others prefer auditory techniques.
Now, unless you have an impairment of one of your senses, you’ll use them all to experience the world on a daily basis. You just may prefer to use one or the other. At any rate, your preferences will probably push you to use certain types of techniques for lucid dreaming. Here are a few examples:
If you’re a letter and reading oriented learner, you might use Letter Induced Lucid Dreaming, since you’re more likely to have letter symbols as features of your dreams. You may also be able to find written articles in your dreams so you can use the writing for a reality check – it usually won’t stay the same between glances in a dream.
If you’re an auditory person, you might check out Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dreaming. Repeating a lucid dreaming phrase out loud to yourself as you fall asleep may make you more likely to start lucid dreaming.
Techniques for lucid dreaming that match up with your personality and learning style can also be used in dream control, as well. I have very creative friends who find themselves painting the scenes for their dreams or their own transformations when they want to shapeshift, for instance.
Figuring out what type of thinker you are can clue you in on the best techniques for lucid dreaming that you can use to succeed as a lucid dreamer.
